Lesson 5: Module D | Cash-based or out-of-network model
Lesson 5 | Module D
The typical model of orthopedic physical therapy services has been within in-network clinics in which patients directly utilize their in-network insurance benefits for the physical therapy services. Due to many different issues, reimbursement rates have decreased steadily over time, forcing in-network clinics to require their clinicians to see a higher volume of patients to stay viable. This can result in situations where clinicians are overworked and patients receive sub-par care.
Lately, a newer model of physical therapy services has become increasingly popular, and that is the cash-based or out-of-network model. In this model, patients pay their provider out of pocket, and can potentially receive compensation from their insurance provider on the back end, based upon their out-of-network coverage. This model has become more popular lately as it allows clinicians to directly work with the people they’re most passionate about helping, while also not being overworked. Patients also benefit from this model because they are able to see expert providers 1-on-1
